Late Maastrichtian benthic foraminiferal response to palaeoenvironmental changes: a case study from the AbTalkh Formation, west of Kopeh-Dagh Basin, Iran
Authors
Abstract:
Benthic foraminiferal assemblages from Maastrichtian strata, Gansserina gansseri-Abathamphalus mayaroensis Planktonic Foraminiferal Zone, of the AbTalkh Formation at Aitamir section (west of the Kopeh-Dagh basin) were investigated in order to evaluate the palaeoenvironmental changes (organic matter flux and bottom-water oxygenation). Maastrichtian faunal assemblages are well preserved and diversified. Fluctuations in the percentage of infaunal and epifaunal morphogroups as well as simple diversity and heterogeneity index are recorded. The study indicates that an unstable environment with oligotrophic to weakly mesotrophic condition and high oxygenated bottom water condition was prevailed during the depositionof the sediments in the latest Cretaceous.

full textIntroducing some echinoderms from the Tirgan Formation, Kopeh-Dagh Basin, NE of Iran
A stratigraphic section from the Tirgan Formation was selected in Arkan village nearby Bojnourd city in order to study echinoderm fauna systematically. Many specimens of echinoderms, especially toxasteridae which is associated with brachiopods were collected and studied systematically in this paper. Microscopie slides were also prepared and studied. All slides contain benthic foraminifers and c...
full textSignificance of ichnofossils in high resolution sequence stratigraphy: Upper Maastrichtian, Kopeh- Dagh Basin, NE Iran
This study shows that ichonology can be used to refine sequence stratigraphy as well as to interpret the depositional environment of the Kalat Formation (Upper Maastrichtian) in the Central Kopeh- Dagh Basin (NE Iran), Dareh-Gaz section. Field studies and petrography of these deposits led to recognize four lithofacies and nine subfacies that formed in the tidal flat (lithofacies A), lagoon (lit...
full textNannostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental study of the lower boundary of the Kalat Formation in East and West of Kopeh- Dagh, Northeast Iran
This study presents the nannostratigraphy and nannofossil events in the lower boundary of Kalat Formation in the East and West of the Kopeh- Dagh basin. The Kalat Formation comprises of coarse grained detritus limestone with subordinate sandstone intercalations. In the current study, six sections have been chosen in the East and West of the basin which are as follow: Dobaradar section, Kalat se...
full textLate Barremian-Early Aptian Ammonites from the Tirgan Formation, Kopet-Dagh Sedimentary Basin, NE Iran
During the recent field research on the Tirgan Formation in the west of Kopet-Dagh sedimentary basin, ammonite assemblages were obtained from the carbonate strata of this formation. This new finding is important for stratigraphical purpose. In this research, 3 genera belong to Heteroceras, Deshayesites and Cheloniceras? as well as one uncertain genus belongs to Turkmeniceras are determined. The...
full textPlanktonic Foraminifera Response to Sudden Global Warming in Late Maastrichtian, a Case Study from Ziyarat-Kola, Central Alborz, Iran
An abrupt global warming event has been recorded in many parts of the world in sediments of Latest Maastrichtian age between 65.45-65.10 Ma. This warm event was documented here at a section near Ziyarat-kola in Central Alborz based on analysis of planktonic foraminifera. An unusual abundance of normally large-size species such as Globotruncana arca, Globigerinelloides subcarinatus, Pseudoguembe...
